Swedish startup Spiideo raised $20 million to advance its AI-driven sports broadcasting technology, aiming for complete automation. Spiideo’s system, used in over 6,000 venues and by 4,000 teams, mimics professional camera operators, reducing broadcasting costs and offering high-quality production for lower-level teams and niche sports.
Game Performance & Injury Prevention
The Malmö Redhawks hockey team have partnered with QlikTech International AB and Stretch AB, to enhance player performance and recovery using advanced data analytics. This technology monitors player health in real time, allowing immediate intervention to prevent injuries and optimise gameplay. Other leading Hockey teams are also now integrating AI into their strategies.
IBM’s watsonx is revolutionising tennis by using generative AI to make predications and collect millions of data points during professional tennis matches. Maria Sharapova suggests that tennis players use the technology. All the data can now be drawn up within seconds to benefit players looking to step up their own games or zoom in on their opponents.

AI is changing the way we referee sports. The NFL is currently testing how to best utilise AI technology. “Line to gain” is closest to implementation.
The Premier League has agreed a deal with Skynet to provide the artificial intelligence for a new semi-automated offside system. Skynet, which has been approved by FIFA, will replace the Hawk-Eye system.
